My recent trip to Peru was largely fantastic, filled with breathtaking landscapes and incredible cultural experiences. However, one aspect left a sour taste in my mouth: my experiences with Uber. While Uber is a convenient option in many parts of the world, my Peruvian experience served as a stark reminder that the service's quality can vary wildly depending on location.

The Problems I Faced

My issues weren't with the app itself; the booking process was generally smooth. The problems arose with the drivers and the overall quality of the service. I encountered several issues throughout my trip:

• Unreliable Drivers: Several drivers cancelled on me at the last minute, leaving me stranded and scrambling for alternative transportation. This was particularly frustrating when I had tight schedules and important appointments.

• Poor Vehicle Condition: Some of the vehicles were in noticeably poor condition. I encountered cars with questionable mechanical integrity, interior wear and tear far beyond what's acceptable for a ride-sharing service, and even instances of lacking basic safety features.

• Pricing Discrepancies: While not overly egregious, I noticed inconsistencies in pricing between what the app quoted and the final fare. This wasn't a huge difference, but it raised questions about transparency.

• Communication Barriers: The language barrier was sometimes a challenge. While many drivers spoke some English, communication wasn't always clear, leading to misunderstandings about destinations and routes.

A Matter of Safety Concerns

Beyond the inconvenience, safety concerns were my primary worry. The condition of some vehicles raised questions about the vetting process for drivers and their cars. The lack of reliable communication also presented challenges in addressing safety issues as they arose.

Recommendations for Travelers to Peru

If you're planning a trip to Peru and are considering using Uber, I strongly recommend the following:

• Have a backup plan: Always have an alternative transportation option in mind, especially during peak hours or in less-populated areas.

• Double-check driver information: Before getting into a vehicle, verify the driver's details against the app information.

• Share your trip details: Share your ride details with a friend or family member so they know your location and expected arrival time.

• Be prepared to negotiate: In some cases, you might need to be more assertive about your destination and fare to avoid misunderstandings.

• Consider alternative transportation: Explore other transportation options such as official taxis or collectivos (shared taxis), especially if you are uncomfortable with the level of service provided by Uber in certain areas.

My experience isn't meant to discourage the use of Uber in Peru entirely, but rather to highlight the potential challenges and advise travelers to be prepared for a less consistent service compared to what they might be used to in other parts of the world. Always prioritize your safety and well-being when selecting transportation.
